Investigating the mummification process (apple experiment)

Link to history/The Ancient Egyptians. Investigate the mummification process and consolidate understanding of mummification. Children get to mummify their own apples, making predictions, comparing the experiment to what the Ancient Egyptians did and evaluating the experiment at a later date. (Can leave the apples as long as you like - we left them for 10 days!) Children love completing this experiment and are engaged the entire time! Materials needed: Small apples, antibacterial hand gel, table salt, bicarbonate of soda, plastic cups, paper towels, vegetable peeler, labels.

Lesson 1 - Gravity Lesson 2 - Friction Lesson 3 - Air resistance Lesson 4 - Water resistance Lessons and worksheets for investigations that covers gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance. Adaptable but provides opportunities to think scientifically and learn with a practical aspect. Please note - lessons are in Smart Notebook format and I have provided a PDF version. Worksheets are in PDF format. Resources are required for the experiments but I found most things were available across school. Experiments can be conducted in groups or as a class. Lesson 1 - dropping two objects to see which hits the ground first (We used two bottles with different amounts of liquid). Lesson 2 - using pull back cars (or could use marbles, etc) and different surfaces to see the impact of friction Lesson 3 - Egg drop challenge making parachutes using knowledge of air resistance Lesson 4 - water resistance using a tub or water and creating shapes out of plasticine to see what has the most/least air resistance. There is enough content in each lesson to last an afternoon, to split over two lessons (input then experiment) or to condense into one lesson.
